Wheat and straw time!!

Here are some pictures of wheat harvest and hauling straw. The wheat was good this year. The price was ok. There is a lot of straw this year. So far we have moved over 800 bales between Henk and myself. And we are not done yet.

It is a long time ago that I updated this blog. I've been busy with all kind a things.

Since the end of April Amy lives with me. And I enjoy that very much. We see each other more and it is less driving back and foward. It is nice to be around each other all the time!!

Two weeks ago we started spreading manure and planting corn. We did this all in about a week. We planted 200 acres (80 ha). The first corn is coming up already.

I also put manure on my bean field. When it dries uip new it is ready to get planted.

Yesterday Amy and I came back from our ski trip. We realy enjoyed it. It was a long time ago that we went for holidays together. On Friday we traveled by train from Toronto to Montreal. We stayed the night in Montreal. At night we went for a walk in the downtown area, but we realy didn't see to much of Montreal On Saterday we rented a car and we drove to Mont-Tremblant. This took only an hour and a half. At 11 o'clock we were at our hotel Chateau Beauvallon. It was beautifull and realy good service.

On saturday afternoon we went skiing. We started on the "baby-hill", to get thing under control a little bit, but after a view runs we went higher up the mountain.
On Sunday we also ski the whole day! The weather was realy nice on the sunday. At night we went out for diner. And then on Monday morning it was time to travel home again. We weren't ready to go home, but we had no choice. The weekend was too short, but we have a beautifull memory. We are going back to Mont-Tremblant!!!!!!!!!

Towersilo

Today we took the old towersilo at Henk's place down. The thing didn't get used for years. And it was a pretty ugly thing to look at. We had other plans with that spot so it was time to take it down.
A friend of Henk came out to help because he knew how to do it. We hooked a long steelcable to the top of the silo and put a tractor on it. Then on the bottom we cut the steel rings of. Then Charly and his son Brain started to knock a hole in the silo, while Henk kept presure on the cable. When the hole was big enough and the silo started to crack, Charly and Brain had to run and Henk pulled it over.
Then the rest of the day we were busy cleaning up. It gave quet a mess. We separeted all the steel from the concrete. Loaded up the steel to bring away and put the concrete on a pile.

Vandaag hebben we de oude torensilo bij Henk plat gelegd. Deze werd al jaren niet meer gebruikt en was een vrij lelijk opstakel. En we willen de plek waar de silo stond voor ronde ballen gaan gebruiken.
Een vriend van Henk kwam helpen want hij wist wel hoe dat moest. Eerst hebben we een lange staalkabel on de top van de silo bevestigd en die aan de trekker gehaakt. Toen hebben we een aantal ringen aan de onderkant losgesneden. En toen zijn Charly en zijn zoon Brain begonnen om een gat in de silo te slaan terwijl de kabel op spanning hield met de trekker. Toen het gat groot genoeg was begon de silo te kraken. Toen moesten Charly en Brain maken dat ze weg kwamen, terwijl Henk de silo om trok.
De rest van de dag zijn we druk geweest om de boel op te ruimen. Is wel leuk zo'n feestje, het geeft alleen zo'n bende!! We hebben al het staal en beton gescheiden, het ijzer is op de kipper geleden en staat klaar om weg gebracht te worden. Het beton zit op een hoop en wordt deze zomer gebruikt onder het erf rondom de nieuw te bouwen stal. Natuurlijk hebben we foto's gemaakt en hier zijn ze!!!

Headgates!! Part 2

My headgates are DONE!!!!!! Finally!!!! I will post some pictures. Making them was one thing, but putting them up was quite a job too!! All done!.
Now I have new welding job at Henk's place; I am building a box were we can put the footbath in. Then we can put the heifers through the footbath. But that is not done yet, maybe pictures someday!!

Mijn voerhekken zijn klaar!! Eindelijk!!! Ik heb wat foto's. Op het moment ben ik een box aan het maken waar we het voetbad in kunnen zetten. Daar komen dan een paar hekken aan om een fuik te maken en dan kunnen we de vaarzen er door jagen. Dit is de enige manier dat wij de vaarzen door een bad kunnen doen. Het is nog niet klaar. Misschien maak ik nog wel een keer foto's!!

Mailbox

It is really sad, but my cow mailbox is leaving. Last winter it got hit by the snowplow at the start of the winter. I refushed to put a new mailbox up while it was still snowplowing season. So I used ducktape to tape the cow mailbox back together!!!! Ducktape forever!!!!! And it stayed up pretty good, it is over a year ago that I tapeed it and it is still there!! But today we seen mailboxes on sale at TSC. So we figured it is time for a new one. Not a cow one this time, and for sure not a John Deere one. The new one is just black!! I took pictures of my old one, but not of the new one because just a black mailbox is not that exciting.

Jammer maar helaas (pindakaas) mijn koeien brievenbus gaat verdwijnen. Vorig jaar winter is tie geraakt door de sneeuwschuif. Dit gebeurde al aan het begin van de winter, en ik voelde er niet veel voor om een nieuwe neer te zetten zodat ze die er ook weer af konden rijden. Daarom heb ik hem toen met ducktape weer aan elkaar geplakt. Dat is nu meer dan een jaar geleden. Vandaag zagen we dat de brievenbussen in de aanbieding waren bij TSC (Noord Americaanse Welkoop). Dus maar een nieuwe meegebracht. Deze keer is het een zwarte geworden. Ik heb foto's van mijn oude bus, niet van de nieuwe, want het is maar een gewone zwarte

Sorry that I didn't post anything for a while. But now here is a new update!!
I have some pictures of my tractor. It needed some things fixed and winter is the time to do that. I took the radiator out because the tractor was getting pretty hot in the summer. I brought it to a place in Strathroy to get cleaned. They cleaned and repainted it. After that I could put it it back in. I also had a leaking seal in the front axle. So while I was waiting to get my rad back I took it apart. It took a little bit to figure out how everthing comes apart but I managed and it is all back together now and everything works fine.

Last Wednesday I went to Toronto for Amy's Birthday. We went out for her Birthday supper. She did get to pick were we were going and she picked Mantra. This is an Indian restaurant with really good food. We enjoyed it!!!!!!
The next day we went to the Toronto Farm show. That was nice too. It was 4 years ago that I went last to the Toronto one. On the way back we did a quick stop at Ikea to get some bookshelves.

Het is weer een tijdje geleden dat ik iets op dit blog gezet heb, maar hier is weer het laatste nieuws. Ik ben aan mijn trekker aan het sleutelen geweest. Hij werd erg warm in de zomer. Daarom heb ik de radiateur er uitgehaald en weg gebracht om van binnen en buiten schoon te laten maken. Omdat dit met zuur gedaan word moest hij ook gespoten worden. Ook heb ik een kering in de vooras vervangen. Het koste wat tijd om uit te vinden hoe alles uit elkaar gehaald moest worden zonder iets te beschadigen maar het is gelukt. Ook zit alles nu weer in elkaar en alles werkt weer.

Afgelopen woensdag ben ik voor Amy's verjaardag naar Toronto geweest. S'avonds zijn we uiteten geweest in een India's restaurant. Dat was erg lekker!! De volgende dag zijn we nog naar de landbouwbeurs in Toronto geweest. Onder weg naar huis nog effe bij Ikea stopt om een boekekast op te halen.

Elections!!

Today was the day of the elections. Since I became a Canadian citizen on the 6th of January I did get to vote too. At first I was not to sure if I was going to vote. I only looked into politics for the last 3 months or so. Of course I always knew a little bit what was going on. But today I made up my mind and did it!!! I voted for the first time in Canada !!! And it felt good. It feels like I am realy a part of the country. I am very thankfull that I can be part of this country!!!
Now we are waiting for the results, I won't know till tomorrow because I am not staying up til the people in BC are done voting and counting.

Vandaag waren de verkiezingen in Canada. Omdat ik de Canadeese nationaliteit heb sinds 6 januari, mocht ik ook stemmen. Eeerst wist ik niet of ik wel wilde stemmen. Ik heb me alleen de laatste 3 maanden verdiept in de politiek hier. Ik wist natuurlijk wel een beetje wat er gaande was. Maar ik heb dus besloten om wel te stemmen, zo gezegd zo gedaan!! Het voelt goed om nu echt deel uit te maken van dit land.
Nu is het wachten op de uitslag. Ik zal de uitslag morgen pas horen. In Britisch Columbia zijn ze drie uur achter op ons, dus het duurt nog een poosje voordat ze daar klaar zijn met stemmen en tellen.

Ja mensen, het wou niet lukken met de foto's van m'n kalf, dus proberen we het nog een keer!! Daar gaan we dan!!!!!

Headgates!!

I am making headgates for my barn. And they are getting there. The actual gates are done, it is just a matter of painting them and putting them up. Which is as much or more work then making the gates. When it is all done I want to try to find some calves to put in the barn. May be I can raise calves for an other farmer. If I can't find somebody to work with, I might buy some heifer calves for my self. But first I have to get the barn ready. Now in the winter I have time for that kind stuff. I have whole list of thing I would like to do at my own place, but I can't everything at the same time. And likely it will spring (and busy) before we know.

I have some pictures of my headgates , I will post them on here!! I also have pictures of my first heifercalf, they are going on to!!!!

Tomorrow I am shipping soyabeans. Back in the spring (2005) I sold some of them. They were at a good price at that time, so I sold them even they had to grow yet.
In the fall I sold some of the wheat for harvest 2006. At the time I sold it, the wheat still had to get planted. Crop prices are low, so if you have the chance to sell your crops at a good price you have to take the risk.

Well that is it for today!!!

Ik ben voerhekken aan het maken voor mijn stal, Ze zijn bijna klaar. De hekken zelf zijn klaar, ik moet ze alleen nog schilderen en op hangen. Dit is net zoveel of meer werk dan het maken zelf. Als alles klaar is, wil ik kijken of ik kalveren op kan fokken voor iemand. Als ik niemand kan vinden, koop ik waarschijnlijk zelf vaars kalveren.
Ik zal wat foto's plaatsen. Ook heb ik foto's van mijn vaars kalf.

Morgen moet soyabonen laden en weg brengen. In het voorjaar had ik een gedeelte van mijn bonen verkocht, terwijl ze nog groeien moesten. In de herfst had ik een gedeelte van mijn tarwe verkocht terwijl ik ze nog zaaien moest. In een tijd van lage prijzen moet je risco nemen om nog wat te verdienen.
Nou dat was tie dan weer.

Year of the heifer calves!!!!?!!!

On Saturday January 14,2006 my first heifer calf of 2006 was born!! She is a daugher of Lucky Mike from Altapon. She is a very nice calf, long and tall!! I have high expectations of her.
Hopefully I am goning to have lots more heifer calves this year. In 2005 I had 18 bull calves versus 4 heifer calves. This ratio is really sad!! But there is not a whole lot we can do about it. So I just hope that 2006 is going to be the year of the heifers!!!

I always had great respect for plumbers, but after tonight even more!!! I installed a new tap in the kitchen. I really had fold myself into the cupboard to attach the waterlines. But I got it done, and it is not leaking (yet!!!)

So that is it for now. Now I only have do the Dutch translation yet and then it my bed time!!

Op zaterdaag 14 januari 2006 is mijn eerste vaarskalf voor dit jaar geboren. Het is een dochter van Lucky Mike van Altapon. Het is een mooi kalf, ze is lang en groot. Ik heb hoge verwachtingen van haar!!
Hopelijk krijg meer vaarskalveren dit jaar!! Vorige jaar had 18 stierkalveren en 4 vaarskalveren. Dit is een erg waardeloze verhouding. Maar er is weinig aan te doen. Dus hoop ik maar dat het een vaarskalveren jaar wordt!!

Ik heb altijd al veel respect voor loodgieter gehad, maar sinds vanavond nog meer!! Ik heb een nieuwe kraan in de keuken geinstalleerd. Ik heb mijzelf helemaal in het keukenkasten moeten vouwen om de leidingen aan te kunnen sluiten. Maar het is gelukt!! En het lekt niet eens (nog niet!!)

Nou dat was het dan weer voor vandaag. Ik ga naar bed!!

CANADIAN!!!!!

I became a Canadian on 6 January 2006!!!! I took a test in November and on the 6th of January I had to take my oath.
Amy's family had organised a little suprise party at night!!!!!

Op 6 januari 2006 ben ik canadees geworden !!!! In november heb ik een examen gedaan en op 6 januari heb ik mijn eed afgelegd. Amy's familie had als verrassing een klein feestje georganiseerd.

A new year started and I would like to wish everbody a happy new year!!!!!!
Er is weer een nieuw jaar begonnen, de allerbeste wensen voor 2006!!!!
I hope that everybody had a good start for the new year. And hopfully everybody had a great time celebrating the start of the new year!!!
Ik hoop dat iedereen een goed start heeft gemaakt, en goed feest gevierd heeft.

Welcome to my blog!

Today is Christmas day, and Amy has told me how easy a blog is to manage, so I thought I would try it to keep everyone in Holland updated about my life in Canada. A quick update on things now, on January 6th 2006, I will officially become a CANADIAN! I wrote my test in November and didn't get any questions wrong, and now I have to go take an oath to finalize the process.
On Christmas Eve, Amy and I opened our stocking presents and helped Max and Charlie (the cats) open their presents. We always do little presents for each other Christmas eve, and the 'bigger' presents on Christmas day at Amy's family's house. Charlie was not too impressed with the whole situation until she got a new scratch pad filled with cat nip, then she was very calm and rolling all over it! Max, as always, was purring through the entire night and pleased with all his presents.
On Christmas day, I went to Amy's house and opened presents with her family. Later, two of her cousins, the husband of her cousing, one of her aunts and one of her uncles, and her grandmother came out. We had a turkey lunch with all the fixings. One of Amy's cousins (Ryan) showed some cork screw tricks, so ask me about those the next time I see you!
We are about to watch the movie "March of the Penguins" which I recommend since it is really good! I have seen it one other time and it is very interesting.
I guess I will try to keep this blog updated with pictures from around the farm (and maybe some in Toronto, where Amy is living), so check back in the future and I will hopefully updated it as it is needed.
